Watermarking a PDF stamps a text overlay on every page to communicate the document's status, restrict its distribution, or reinforce ownership. The most common watermarks are DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, INTERNAL, SAMPLE, and PAID - but this tool lets you set any text, so you can use your company name, a document reference number, or a custom message.
Diagonal watermarks are the most visible and are typically used for CONFIDENTIAL and DRAFT documents where the status must be unmistakeable. Center placement is cleaner for SAMPLE or branded overlays. Top and bottom placements are less intrusive and useful for documents where the watermark is informational rather than restrictive.
Opacity controls how strongly the watermark competes with the document content. A setting around 20-35% is visible without obscuring text. For CONFIDENTIAL overlays on documents you intend to keep readable, stay below 40%. For SAMPLE or DRAFT stamps where the marking is the point, 50-60% makes the status unambiguous.
Watermarks applied with this tool are text overlays rendered onto the PDF pages. They cannot be removed by simply selecting and deleting them in a PDF reader, but they are not a cryptographic security measure - they are a visual marking tool suitable for document management and workflow communication.
